NINETEEN – GONE

The Harrison family was ready.

Well, Ina was. Like many others, her family didn’t believe her when she told them about the impeding disasters from Watch.

Her husband Jason was angry in the beginning when she took out that credit card for survival supplies, but when she paid it off and it didn’t hurt the family budget, he didn’t say anything else. She didn’t get it for the current situation; she had taken it out three years before when the asteroid was predicted.

Had they been home, Ina wouldn’t have worried about what was coming. She lived in a prime spot. Kentucky, high elevation, far enough from the New Madrid Fault line and any of the West Coast disasters.

What she hadn’t planned on was her mother’s heart attack. She, Jason, and their two teenage children had driven to Kansas to be with her mother.

The warning from Watcher and talk on the threads had begun but no one could have predicted it was going to hit so fast. Even Ina had an air of disbelief. After all, the predicted asteroid, volcano, or nuclear bomb warnings never came to fruition.

This did. And they were far from home.

Just in case, though, she had supplies in the car.

Her mother had just been released from the hospital when the earthquake hit on the West Coast. Kansas definitely wasn’t a good place to be; it was too close to the fault line.

Her mother argued with her, but finally relented and got in the car with Ina and her family. She thought about taking the back roads, but it was faster taking I40.

She made the wrong choice.

Eighteen miles outside of Kansas traffic came to a dead stop.

It was thickening and slowing beforehand but Jason kept a good speed and they even discussed getting off the highway, ultimately deciding against it.

The radio talked about the storms in the east and the earthquakes out west, about how storms were starting in Texas and Oklahoma with tornado warnings. They reiterated that people in the east should get to high ground, people in the Midwest should prepare to go below, but there was no talk about the New Madrid fault line and that made Ina feel good.

“Probably an accident,” Ina said aloud as she looked at the traffic ahead.

All the lanes were blocked and to make it worse, people were driving on the shoulder, causing a traffic jam there as well.

“Probably,” Jason replied. “I can’t see far enough ahead to tell if there’s an exit.”

Ina couldn’t see either. A tractor trailer in the left lane and a big RV three cars ahead blocked the view.

“We haven’t moved in ten minutes,” Jason said.

Ina glanced at him. “How are we on gas?”

“Half a tank.”

From the back seat her mother said, “Maybe you should shut off the engine, or at least the AC. We can open windows. Heck, if it gets too hot we can step out. Others are.”

Ina didn’t see anyone ahead out of their car, but when she turned in her seat she could.
